International Women's day, 8th March, 2012

I want to share the few photos that I have when Malladi Subamma last visited the University to give us the cheque on 8th March, 2012.

Malladi Subamma is a well known women's rights activist. She was born on August 2, 1924 at Pothardhakam in Repella of Guntur district and married MV Rama Murthy. She fought for the upliftment of women community and participated in anti-liquor movement. She worked as editor for ‘Stree Swetcha’ paper.  Subbamma worked for improvement of female literacy. She became a prominent personality after launching the anti-liquor movement and succeeded in ensuring that the then Government headed by late N.T. Rama Rao imposed total prohibition in the State immediately after assuming power for the second time in 1994.I have had various interactions with her in her home at Mehendipatnam.

What i found amazing about her was that she sold her house , her personal jewelry and collected the money. She told me that her children were well off and were doing well in life and hence  do not need her money. She started a trust to work for the society and gave donations to different bodies. How many of us can think in this way? Though to an institution this  may not be a big amount but it came from an individual and hence I value her contribution a lot.
