Women's world

Women's Worlds (WW) Congress is an International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women,

held every three years. The focus of the congress is gender research and interdisciplinary scholarship. This congress is initiated by Worldwide Organization of Women's Studies –WOWS. I wanted to bring this Conference to India and when I went to the US in April I bid for it.

                 

The Bid Process:

This conference was open for the year 2014, and the International organization has called for Invitations from interesting institutes and a Group of feminists with strong institutional backing who would be eligible to undertake the organization of the 12th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women in 2014. This Conference was never held in India, though we have had such a strong women’s movement and women’s scholarship in the different Universities across the country. Hence I was very much tempted to get this Conference into India.  As per the Women’s World (WW) website, the India contact was Dr. Kumud Sharma from Centre for Women's Development Studies, Delhi is one of the member in above organization.  However, through our follow up, we found that  Dr. Kumud Sharma had retired and we could not contact her.  Hence I ( Dr. Rekha Pande, Professor and Head, Centre for Women’s Studies),  in collaboration with the Hyderabad convention centre  bid for this conference  directly and was  able to influence the International Site selection committee through my  bid.  I had to make a presentation and  many mails went up and down for a year with many queries .

The results were announced by the site selection committee on December 13, 2011 and we have received an official communication that Hyderabad has been selected as a destination to host Women's Worlds (WW) 2014.
