An evening with students of the Calicut University

The evening on 5th December, 2018, in Calicut was spent in the company of students all doing their masters and Ph. D's in Women's Studies. Calicut also know as Kozhi Kodi is derived from the Malayalam word Koyil  Kotta meaning fortified place. We could catch the sunset at the beach and it was at Kappad Beach that Vasco da Gama landed in 1498. I could see some beautiful old houses along the beach signifying the characteristic Kerala style of architecture. We also went saree shopping for the beautiful sarees of Kerala. But the highlight of the evening  was Halwa shopping. The streets are filled with the Calicut  Halwa and they look so colourful and mouth watering. Made in different flavours right from Pineapple,to Banana to Raspberry to Water melon, to Badam, to Almond, to Kaju,  and who wants to think of  celestrol  in front of these variety of coloured beauties. The students told me you get Halwa all over kerala but the Calicut Halwa is the best. What was nice, was that they can pack all the different coloured  halwas in a box in small sizes  for a tourist to carry home and there is not a single flavour that one can miss.
